5 Habits to Maintain Optimum Eye Health

There’s no doubt that your eyes play a crucial role in your daily activities. Thus, it is quite important that you keep them in tip-top shape as much as you can. Here at our Las Cruces optical practice2, we teach our clients how to properly take care of their eyes to avoid serious vision problems in the future.

1. Get to know the eye health history of your family.

Most eye problems are hereditary in nature hence the importance of figuring out as early as you can if your family have a history of eye diseases and conditions.

2. Strive to be nowhere in between a healthy range of weight.

Several eye conditions are complications brought about by being obese or overweight such as diabetes (which complicates into glaucoma).

3. Eat for your eyes.

Whole food sources are excellent for your eye health. These include dark leafy greens such as kale, spinach, and collard greens. Foods rich in Omega-3s such as halibut, tuna, and salmon are good for your eyes, too.

4. Quit smoking.

Smoking increases your chance of severe vision loss, particularly when you’re already in your senior year such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Pregnant women who smoke are also most likely to give birth to babies with retinopathy problems.

5. Do not take your protective eye wear for granted.

Most of us tend to take those protective eye wear for granted. Always put on your goggles, eye guards, and safety shields when you’re doing something (e.g contact sports). Most protective eye wear are made of polycarbonate which is 10 times stronger than plastic when it comes to eye protection.
