Las Cruces Eye Care: Getting to Know the Omega-3s

Dry eyes is one of the most common eye problem treated by Dr. Fillmore and his Las Cruces eye care team at the Fillmore Eye Clinic. This condition is primarily caused by your eyes not producing enough tears - a combination of oils, moisture, mucus, and special proteins. With less tears produced, an imbalance could occur around the eye leading to infection and other signs associated with dry eyes. Yet, fret no more! A daily dose of healthy Omega-3s will surely keep those tears flowing, in a not so depressing way of course.

The Super Fatty Acid

So what’s with the hype on Omega 3s, you might ask. Apart from its anti-inflammatory properties which could help prevent coronary heart disease, Crohn’s disease and cancer, foods rich in Omega-3s have also been shown to help people with depression and anxiety. And yes, it has also been shown to improve eye health and avoid eye problems such as dry eyes.

Infant Vision Development

It has also been shown that Omega-3s when supplied to a developing fetus through maternal supplementation and/or newborns who receive Omega-3s with their milk have improved visual acuity than those without supplementation. You can read more of that study here.

Rich Sources of Omega-3s

So which food sources are rich in Omega 3s? Oily fishes, right? However if you’re a bit concerned about the mercury content of these fishes, especially if you’re pregnant, you might want to try these other sources:

  • Seeds, Nut & Grains - wheat, walnuts, oats, flaxseed
  • Legumes - leeks, soy beans & pinto, kidney beans
  • Vegetables - cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, squash
  • Raw Fruits - strawberries, avocados
  • Oils - soybean, canola, and flaxseed
